If you’ve ever used makeup then there’s a 99.9% chance that you’ve come across someone frowning at you while saying “eww, all that makeup will damage your skin”. Before we get into the finer details I want you to note that makeup does not ruin your skin. Neglecting your skin under that makeup is what ruins your skin. Got it? Great… let’s move on. In this article, I’m going to share with you a couple of reasons why you breakout after using makeup and some tips on what you should do about it.
- YOU SLEEP WITH YOUR MAKEUP ON
Slaying your face for dinner with bae or a fabulous night out with the girls is fun… but you know whats not fun? Getting home at 4am, drunk out of your mind and then realizing that you have a full face of makeup that you need wash off. So you grab your towel and head for your bed. Errrhhhm… big mistake. Sleeping with your makeup on not only stains your sheets (gross!) but it’s terrible for your skin.
You need to make sure that you remove your makeup and that you are using the right products to remove your makeup, whether it be an oil based cleanser, makeup removers etc. and then follow your night time skin care routine. Et voila, clean face = clean pillow covers. Thank me later!
- YOUR BRUSHES ARE DIRTY
Cleaning your makeup brushes is the most tedious part of makeup (right up there with taking it off in the wee hours of the morning…I digress) but it has to be done. Re-using your makeup brushes over and over again not only lessens the flawlessness of your makeup but you’re literally spreading bacteria all over your face. Try cleaning your makeup brushes after every use or second use (I’ve got a great video on that on my Instagram right here (link)) and let them get some sunshine. If you feel that they’re going to take too long to dry and you need to use them soon then grab some rubbing alcohol, a tissue paper, dip your brush in it and run it across the towel… your brush will be clean and ready to use again. (this method is by all means NOT a replacement for washing your brushes… please do not use it too many times).
- YOUR MAKEUP HAS EXPIRED
I know when I started using makeup, I would use it sparingly and as a result I would have a bottle of foundation for 5 years… I had no idea that makeup products have an expiration date (mind blown emoji). Just like a lot of good things, your makeup too has a “best before” date. The jet black eyeliner or the lipstick that you’ve had for three years has built up bacteria and should be tossed in the bin. It’s painful, I know but the lesson here is USE YOUR MAKEUP because ‘YOLO” and you might has well look good while you’re at it.
- YOU’RE ALLERGIC TO MAKEUP
Some of our skin may be more sensitive than others. If you keep breaking out whenever you try anything makeup related, you may want to visit your skin doctor and find out what you are allergic to. The makeup industry has grown and you might find products that might be free from whatever it is you are allergic to.
- DUST ON YOUR BRUSHES
So your brushes are clean but you’ve left them on your counter exposed. I know they look cute and girly but, they’re exposed. Dust can accumulate on your brushes thus making them dirty all over again. Try keeping your clean brushes in a clean makeup bag and store them until you are ready to make use of them. Alternatively, you can disinfect your brushes before using them again.
GENERAL CLEANLINESS
Other general things that could be causing a breakout:
- Cellphones – you touch a million things during the day and then you touch your face. Try to clean/disinfect your cellphone regularly
- Dirty pillow cases- wash your pillow cases regularly. Just wash them.
- Eat food that is good for you. This means increasing your vegetable intake, less sweets, dairy & every other delicious thing out there, sigh.
- Drink more water
- Try by all means to reduce stress. High stress has an effect on your overall well-being and more especially, your skin. Meditate, exercise, start a new hobby etc.
- You touch your face- it isn’t only during these covid-19 times that touching your face is a big hazard. Your hands are full of germs that you’ve collected during the day and they all transfer onto your face when you touch it. Avoid touching your face and wash your hands before you do.
That’s all for now. If there are more things that you know of, do let us know in the comment section below. I love hearing from you.
Until next time. Stay safe doll!
