“The mind is everything. What you think, you become” – Buddha

During the times of a pandemic and so many other crises, it’s easy to stay in a state of gloom. While we often think the key to health and happiness is healthy eating and exercise, there are other forms of self-care that help to cultivate a positive state of being. This brings me to an important and often overlooked form of self-care: affirmations.

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that are aimed at influencing the conscious and subconscious. They are used to challenge and overcome self-sabotage and thoughts that are negative. When you say, think and believe them, they begin to shape your reality.

Is this a mantra?

Mantras are statements that are repeated frequently and internally. They are commonly used during spiritual practices.

When they are effective, both mantras and affirmations can help with the reduction of stress and anxiety, increase positive emotions, increase confidence and increase the likelihood of personal success.

Let’s get started

You may feel a bit weird when you first start saying your affirmations, especially when they have to do with something as sensitive as physical appearance. However, the more you recite them to yourself, the more comfortable you will feel. Do not concern yourself with how “unrealistic” you may think your affirmations are, the key to a successful affirmation is – belief. When you believe in your affirmations, miracles start to happen.

When should you say affirmations to yourself?

You can say your affirmations to yourself at any time. I do, however, recommend the following times:

  • When you wake up in the morning
  • Before you go to sleep in the evening
  • During meditation
  • During your walks
  • When you look at yourself in the mirror
  • Between meetings and classes
  • While cooking

…you see where this is going, right?. It’s important to memorize, read your affirmations out loud actually believe in every affirmation you recite.
